With an announcement that combines generosity with stringent conditions, Washington has pledged $2 billion for UN emergency relief efforts. However, this contribution came with a blunt message for the international body: it must "evolve or perish."

A Significant Pledge During Wider Budget Reductions

This commitment was made during a time of significant reductions in US funding for humanitarian operations. Additional reductions are expected from other key donors such as European nations. The US representative, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, delivered the statement alongside the United Nations' emergency relief chief.

"This contribution will save millions of lives," affirmed the UN's humanitarian chief. Yet, this sum constitutes just a small portion of America's historical spending, which were estimated at approximately $17 billion just a few years ago.
