The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed During FIFA Tournament Despite Objections by Iran and Egypt
Arrangements to hold Pride-focused celebrations in Seattle during the upcoming World Cup are proceeding as scheduled, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations voiced strong concerns regarding a planned “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy Alongside City Celebrations
Seattle's planning committee stated clearly they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. This coincides with the Group G match between Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Additionally, the tournament's governing body has a policy allowing Pride flags to be brought into the stadium.
“In our role as hosts, our primary task is to get the city ready to host the matches and manage the city experience outside of Seattle Stadium,” said a committee representative.
Legal Context of Objections
Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, while in Egypt, morality laws are frequently employed to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association stated it refused to be linked to events that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation also raised “its opposition against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance Regarding Symbols
The international federation holds full authority over match venues during games. Although it prohibits political signage with political messages, it allows flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was applied at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of authorities confiscating flags.
- The Pride Match concept was devised to highlight the city's proud history of championing equality.
- A design contest is underway to produce artwork celebrating the event.
- Planners are committed to ensuring every visitor are welcomed in the city throughout the tournament.
The region hosts a significant most prominent communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian diaspora, and diverse populations from every competing country. “Our commitment is to ensuring everyone encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our part of the country,” the statement added.
