Prisons Cannot Be Resolved Overnight, Government Official States, as Police Hunt For Two Men Mistakenly Released
Opposition justice spokesperson the shadow minister has labeled the circumstances as a "complete and utter mess," commenting earlier today.
Appearing on a radio program, he referenced comments made by David Lammy after a previous inmate discharge, saying that Lammy would establish stricter verifications.
"It took almost a week for the corrections department supposedly to realize this has happened" and inform the authorities, Jenrick says, "leaving them a week behind in the search to find him."
The shadow minister criticises Lammy's performance during yesterday's PMQs and accuses him of a "total dereliction of duty."
Speaking about mistaken inmate discharges in broader terms, Jenrick underlines that "every single accidental discharge [...] is unforgivable."
He acknowledges there were such releases under the previous administration, but claims the number "has increased dramatically" under the current government.
Advocating additional correctional facilities to be constructed, he adds: "What the British people want to see now are proper safeguards implemented."
"This represents a particular bureaucratic error by the justice department supervised by David Lammy," Jenrick says.
