Multiple Hurt as Rough Air Impacts Delta Aircraft into Sydney

Delta Airlines said the Airbus A350 encountered "short-lived turbulence" as it touched down at its destination.

A number of individuals have been injured when a Delta Airlines flight traveling from Los Angeles to Sydney encountered turbulence this past Friday.

The flight, numbered 41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it made its approach and landed at Sydney Airport, an airline spokesperson stated. A number of the onboard staff required medical attention.

The New South Wales Ambulance Service said they assessed five individuals, and transported three of them to hospital with relatively minor issues that comprised pain in the back and head pain. The patients' ages ranged from their 30s up to the 70s.

The reasons turbulence is becoming more common - and potentially more dangerous.

Last year, two dozen individuals were injured when another Delta jet, on a route from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, Netherlands, experienced "significant" turbulence just 120 minutes into the long-haul flight, and diverted for an emergency landing.

In 2024, passengers and crew on a Singapore Airlines flight experienced a harrowing brief five-second of severe turbulence. A traveler died and many were hurt, as unbelted passengers were thrown from their seats and fell back down.

In-flight turbulence is fairly routine while flying, and while instances of significant turbulence appear to be increasing, they are still very rare.

Estimates show that there are around thousands of instances of significant in-flight disturbance annually, out of a overall number of over 35 million journeys that now take off worldwide.
