A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building in the background assisted us verify the video.

Our team is analyzing images and video shared earlier today that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to verify the location from which the images originated relied on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.

We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.

Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.

We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
