Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people were killed and over 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
