EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
