The daughter of former South African Head of State Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related accusations at the beginning of her trial in the harbor city of the city of Durban.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being tried over comments she posted on social media in the past during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that followed the apprehension of her parent.

A week of disorder in various areas of the country in July 2021, including plundering and intentional burning, left at least 300 individuals killed and resulted in damage worth an approximate 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).

She has been alleged of inciting this turmoil and faces charges of provocation to commit terror acts and public disorder.

History of the Legal Matter

The unrest were centered in the regions of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and came after the former president's arrest for disobeying a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an probe into accusations of graft while he was in power.

The defendant has consistently rejected the accusations against her, with her attorney in the past labelling the prosecution's legal argument as weak.

She has also repeatedly claimed the allegations against her were an attempt to resolve political scores with her dad after he founded his own political party and competed against the ruling party.

Support and Court Representation

This was supported by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the case was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and family-related harassment" against the former president and his kin.

A small number of supporters from her party, her party, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other group representatives participated in the court sessions inside.

The defendant's representatives has argued that the testimony presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and fails to provide substantial proof for a criminal finding.
