Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing unwanted offerings can be considered somewhat rude – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Clear-Out

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 presents received by her by international figures during her travels. This unusual assortment is said to contain items such as a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The presents, collectively, are worth an estimated €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold via competitive bidding by a Italian art dealer. A date remains to be announced, but the intention is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the proceeds benefiting non-profit organizations.

Storage Room Holdings

The presents are said to be kept in a storage room on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Reports indicate that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been stored away over a long period.

A complete inventory remains disclosed, but a glimpse was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The discussion focused on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. By law, a prime minister must declare presents worth more than €300.

An International Array of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
  • A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
  • Various other items including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.

Political Context

Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from within her party, with winning over global statesmen and making Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.

This charitable initiative represents a novel approach to deal with the protocol gifts that build up during a political career.
