A senior Russian general has been killed following an blast in Moscow, according to reports from authorities.
The event occurred on Monday morning when an bomb concealed beneath a vehicle detonated, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' operational training department.
Investigators indicated that one possible explanation involves the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has offered no public response.
Scene of the Incident
Officials have been sent to the site, which is said to be in a southerly district of the capital.
Accounts indicate the detonation happened in a car park close to a residential building.
Pattern of Incidents
Since the beginning of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military personnel have been targeted within Moscow.
This latest event comes after other serious incidents, for instance:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a device concealed on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a informant in the past connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are not publicly admitted as a matter of official stance.
The war has witnessed clandestine operations moving into the streets of the Russian capital.
The probe into General Sarvarov's death continues to be ongoing.
